Praise the Lord with a new song
(Psalm 149:1-9)

Psalm 149 is the 4th Hallelujah psalm in which the psalmist gives praise and thanks to God for the victory that He had given to the Israelites.

1. The saints who praise the Lord
All saints must praise the Lord with a new song. A "new song" doesn't mean singing new content, but singing and praising the Lord with a new mind.
We must know who God is in order to praise Him. However, knowing God through a Bible study only means that we come to know objective truth. We need to experience this truth subjectively, as we discover the love that God gave to us in Jesus Christ, and trust by the Spirit that He died on the cross for us, came to life again for us, and even now redeems us and is with us. When we come to know God in this way, we will continue to praise the Lord without ceasing.

2. Rejoice in our God
There are several reasons why God's people must continually give thanks to God:
(1) Because He is our creator.
(2) Because He is our King.
(3) Because He is our savior.
When we come to know these three reasons, we are beginning our spiritual knowledge. These are good reasons to praise the Lord as His people. And our praises must be full of them.

3. Victorious Hymns
Hymns of victory should be a part of the worship service. Verse 6 of this psalm clearly foresees the victory of God's people and praises God as a result.
Because we live in a corrupted world, war is inevitable. However, this does mean that God's people should take up arms, and become soldiers. The power of the sword in verse 6 is not intended for the church or a particular person in the physical sense. Our weapons are not the weapons of the world, but "God's divine power is to demolish any stronghold" (2 Corinthians 10:4). In other words, this psalm teaches us about spiritual war. We must become conquerors in Christ, who have gained victory over the world.

4. Praise the Lord with a new song
Our new experience of God's grace makes us sing a new song. When the Israelites came back to their nation with a renewed view of God's grace, they wrote this psalm reflecting their new experience of His goodness.

My beloved Christians!
By meditating on God's grace, whether you are healthy or sick, joyful or sad, I sincerely pray that you and I will sing a new song in the name of Jesus Christ.
