본 시는 시편 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130편과 함께 참회시로 알려져 있습니다.
1. 고통 중에서 긍휼을 부르짖음
시인은 1절에서 하나님으로부터 긍휼을 구하고, 2절은 그 이유를 말하고 있습니다. 즉 모든 사람은 하나님 앞에서 의롭지 못하기 때문에 하나님의 긍휼을 힘입어야 한다는 것입니다. 자신의 의로 하나님 앞에 의롭다 함을 받을 인생은 하나도 없습니다.
하나님이 긍휼을 구하는 다윗의 환경은 매우 위태로웠습니다. 시인은 자기의 고통이 자신이 범환 죄와 무관하지 않기 때문에 하나님의 긍휼하심으로 진노를 면하게 해달라고 간구합니다. 뿐만 아니라 자기를 둘러싼 원수의 핍박으로 인해 죽은 지 오랜 된 자같이 되었고, 절망에 빠진 참담한 인생이 되었다고 합니다. 이것은 십자가에 못 박히신 예수님의 고통을 연상케 합니다.
그러나 하나님은 우리가 아무리 위태한 지경에 빠져있어도 참회하고 하나님 앞으로 나가기만 하면 우리를 구원하시는 분이십니다.
2. 하나님은 능력있게 역사하신다
다윗은 과거의 하나님을 기억하고 묵상하며 참회의 기도를 합니다. 그는 단순히 하나님을 찾기보다 하나님 자신을 사모합니다(6절). 그리고 하나님께서 자기를 외면하지 마시기를 기도합니다. 다윗에게 가장 괴로운 것은 원수의 학대보다 하나님의 홀대인 것입니다.
그는 고난 중에 있고 위기에 처했습니다. 그런 그가 할 수 있는 것은 하나님의 인도하심을 간구하는 것입니다. 8-10절에서 그는 하나님의 인도하심을 3번 구하고 있습니다.
① 내가 다닐 길을 알게 하소서 - 말씀 계시를 원함
② 나를 가르쳐 주의 뜻을 행하게 하소서 - 방향 설정을 원함
③ 나를 공평한 땅에 인도하소서 - 목자의 인도를 바라는 겸손한 요청
3. 하나님의 종의 기도
다윗은 박해 아래서도 하나님의 종으로 살기를 원하는 기도를 합니다. 그는 이 기도를 하며 3가지 논지로 하나님의 사랑의 응답을 요구합니다.
① 주의 이름을 위하여 - 다윗은 자기 백성을 세우시고 방어하실 것을 약속하신 하나님의 진실하심을 온 세상이 알도록 자기 백성을 환난에서 구원해 달라고 기도합니다.
② 주의 공의로 인하여 - 죄악 된 인간의 본성으로는 구원이 없으므로 하나님의 공의로우심으로 인하여 구원해 달라고 기도합니다.
③ 주의 인자하심을 인하여 - 인간은 구원과 구속을 받을 자격이 없는 사람들이기에 하나님의 무한하신 사랑에 소망을 두며 기도합니다.
사랑하는 성도 여러분,
높으신 하나님의 종의 자리는 매우 영광된 자리입니다. 그러나 우리는 무익한 종이며 책임을 다하지 못했습니다. 이 사실을 진심으로 회개 하므로 하나님의 구원과 은혜를 힘입는 하나님의 신실한 백성들이 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 간절히 소원합니다.
A penitential prayer in the midst of suffering
(Psalm 143:1-12)
Psalm 143, in addition to Psalms 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, and 130, is known as a penitential prayer.
1. A cry for righteousness in the midst of suffering
The psalmist in verse 1 pleaded to God for justice and in verse 2, explained the reason for it. Since no one is righteous before God, they owe Him justice. There is no one who can be called righteous before God according to their own righteousness.
Therefore, it was very dangerous for David to ask God for justice in his situation. The psalmist didn't think that his suffering mattered to the sins that he had committed. Therefore, his only hope was that as he pleaded for God's righteousness, he could avoid wrath according to God's compassion. In addition, he said that he had become like those who were long dead because of the persecution of his enemies, and that he had fallen into despair and become a dismayed man. This reminds us of the suffering of Jesus Christ, who was nailed to the cross. Therefore, no matter how dangerous a situation we fall into, if we go to God and confess our sins, He will save us.
2. God's mighty acts
David remembered how God had been in the past. He was absorbed in meditation, and lifted up a penitential prayer to God. He thirsted for God Himself rather than simply look for God's help (v. 6). He also prayed that God would not turn away from him. The difficulty that David faced was God's unkind treatment rather than the enemy's. He was surrounded by trials and a crisis at the same time. All he could do was beg for God's guidance. In vv. 8-10, he asked for God's guidance three times:
(1) Show me the way that I should go - a desire for a word of revelation
(2) Teach me to do your will - a desire for determining direction
(3) Lead me on level ground - a humble request for shepherding guidance
3. A prayer as God's servant
David prayed that he wanted to live as God's servant even under persecution. He entreated God for His love at three points in his prayer:
(1) for your name's sake - God promised that He would raise and protect His people. David prayed that His people would be delivered from afflictions in order that God's truth could be known to the world.
(2) in your righteousness - Because there is no salvation for those who are evil by nature, David prayed that they would be saved by His righteousness.
(3) in God's unfailing love - Because men are not qualified to be saved and redeemed, David prayed that they would rely on His unfailing love.

The position of God's servant can be high and glorious, but we cannot profit from this. There is no way that we can carry out our duty completely. If you confess this fact, then you realize that you owe God everything for His salvation and grace. I sincerely pray that you will be God's faithful people in the name of Jesus Christ.
