A song of gratitude
(Psalm 138:1-8)

In the previous psalm (Psalm 137), the Israelites who were captured as captives were not able to praise the Lord freely among the Gentiles. However, in Psalm 138, the Israelites not only praised the Lord, but gave thanks to Him in their expectation that even Gentile kings would one day praise the Lord. Gratitude is the most important element in the spirit of worship.

1. The phrase, "giving thanks to God," means that we praise God
The act of giving thanks or having an attitude of thanks for material possessions, is not as important as the God who receives our thanks. The motive for thanksgiving comes from God, because thanksgiving focuses on God. It is generally assumed that material possessions, health, success, and other such blessings can be reason enough to give thanks. However, the Israelites wrote their own songs of thanks ahead of time to God. The foundation for their thanks was not in their material possessions and success, but in God alone. When God is with us, we have all the reason we need to give thanks to God. No matter how much we may be under unfavorable conditions and suffering, we can believe and thank Him for giving us the very best thing, Himself. Those who go along with Almighty God can always praise the Lord.

2. ‘Thanks' is meant as a confession
The psalmist's praise to the Lord was a public confession of faith. Before the close gaze of many people, he tried to give thanks to the Lord alone and praise Him with his whole heart. We cannot give proper thanks without confession. Here, confession means frankly uncovering all our sins before God rather than confessing hidden sins to ourselves. In this way, the apostle Paul said, "By the grace of God, I am what I am" (1 Corinthians 15:10).
The main spirit of thanks does not come on account of receiving something. Although we may not receive anything, we must thank God simply out of our confession as human beings before God. God is not pleased with what little material stuff we may offer Him. If we do not offer up our thanks from life itself, then the thanks that follows from our life purpose and sense of duty will not be real either. Therefore, our thanks should not center on what we offer to God, but on our confession of faith which is made new every day.

Conclusion

We must give thanks to the Lord for His love and faithfulness. Our response in prayer to God should not be because we are special or have supernatural power, but because the Lord is love and faithfulness.
We must praise the Lord in public. The Lord's name and words must be lifted up high over all other names. The Lord who looks upon the lowly and the modest will preserve our lives at any cost, and He who is faithful will save us.
We must give thanks for His love and faithfulness. By lifting up His name each day, I sincerely pray that you and I will praise the Lord in the name of Jesus Christ.
