참 예배는 하나님의 은혜로 인간이 할 수 있는 가장 높고 고상한 활동이라고 John Stott 목사님은 말씀합니다. 그러나 현대교회에서 이 같은 예배 모습은 거의 찾아볼 수 없습니다. 무엇이 참 예배인지를 잊어버렸고, 많은 교회들이 참 예배를 완전히 버렸습니다.

1. 올라가는 노래에서 가장 강조한 것
올라가는 노래 중 마지막이 되는 본 시는 예배를 강조했습니다. ‘여호와를 송축하라’는 시편의 종결 주제입니다. 이 시는 짧은 시이지만 밤의 노래로 놀라운 능력을 가진 시입니다. 밤은 휴식, 중단, 암흑, 정절을 연상케 하지만 성전의 밤은 예외입니다.

2. 레위인의 섬김
만민이 잠든 밤에도 일하는 일꾼들이 있어 국가나 사회가 지탱됩니다. 지방에서 올라온 순례자들이 예루살렘에 도착하는 시간은 항상 늦은 밤이었기 때문에 저들의 시야에 들어오는 첫 광경은 불이 밝혀 있는 성전과 거기서 밤새껏 일하는 일꾼들이었습니다. 일꾼 중에는 제사장 뿐 아니라 찬양대원들, 그리고 특별한 직함이 없는 레위인들까지 모두 여호와를 섬기는 고귀한 일에 종사하고 있었기 때문에 시인은 이들을 ‘여호와의 모든 종들’이라고 표현했습니다.
레위인들은 성전 예배를 밤낮으로 담당했습니다. 따라서 성전 순례를 마치고 고향으로 가는 순례자들은 자기들이 없는 동안에도 예루살렘에서 레위인들이 하나님께 예배를 집전할 것을 생각하고 기뻐했습니다.
성전에서 밤에 일하는 일꾼들의 하는 일은 등불을 켜 성전을 밝히는 것과 제단에 불이 꺼지지 않도록 관리하며, 여호와를 찬양하고 손을 들고 기도하는 것입니다.

3. 오늘의 예배
가장 중요하고, 가장 긴급하며, 가장 영광스러워야 할 예배가 그 존엄성과 영광스러움을 상실한 것은 우리가 예배하는 일에 소흘하며 자기중심적인 예배를 드리며 하나님을 잊어버리고 있기 때문입니다. 이것은 우리가 하나님을 전혀 알지 못하는 자라는 결론에 이르게 합니다. 하나님을 모르면 하나님께 바른 예배를 드릴 수 없게 됩니다.

4. 성경적 대답
하나님께 바른 예배를 드리려면 먼저 하나님을 알아야 하며 하나님을 계시한 성경을 연구하고 배워야 합니다. 그러므로 ① 여호와의 종은 기도해야 합니다. ② 여호와의 종은 성경을 읽고 가르쳐야 합니다. ③ 여호와의 종은 음악을 감독해야 합니다. ④ 여호와의 종은 하나님을 공경해야 합니다.

4. 밤의 축복
하나님을 신중하게 만나고 경건하게 예배하는 자에게 천지를 지으신 여호와께서 시온에서 복을 주실 것입니다.
이 복을 받으시고 누리시는 저와 여러분이 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 간절히 소원합니다.

Praise the Lord, all you servants of the Lord!
(Psalm 134:1-3)

Pastor John R.W. Stott says, "True worship is the highest and most noble activity that human beings can ever do to give thanks to God for His grace." But in many contemporary churches, we can almost never find worship like this. They have forgotten what true worship is, and many churches have simply thrown it away.

1. The greatest emphasis in the songs of ascent
This last psalm among the songs of ascents emphasizes the worship service. 'Praise the Lord' is the concluding theme of the Psalter. This is a short psalm, but the fact that this psalm is to be sung through the night has amazing power. Night is normally associated with rest, discontinuation, and darkness, but the night at the temple is an exception.

2. The Levites' service
A country and a society are maintained by people who work through the night while others sleep. Because pilgrims from around the country often arrived at Jerusalem late at night, their first view upon arrival would have been the temple that was lighted. Not only the priests, but many worshipers also worked through the night. Choir members and Levites without any title were engaged in valuable service to the Lord. So, the psalmist described all of them as 'servants of the Lord.' The Levites were in charge of worship at the temple day and night. Accordingly, when the pilgrims had finished their pilgrimage and were heading back to their hometown, they were comforted by the fact that these Levites were performing worship, even while they were not in Jerusalem. The work that these workers performed in the temple was to light the lamp and keep the temple bright, to make sure that the light kept burning at the altar, to praise the Lord, and to raise their hands while they prayed.

3. Today's worship
The worship service must be the most momentous, urgent, and glorious event. However, worship has lost its dignity and glory, because we have neglected our worship service, become self-centered in our worship, and been oblivious to God. We can conclude from this that we have never really known God completely. And if we do not know God. we cannot worship God in righteousness.

4. The biblical response
If we worship God in righteousness, we must first know Him by studying and learning the Bible that reveals Him. Therefore, 1) all the servants of the Lord must pray, 2) all the servants of the Lord must read and teach the Bible, 3) all the servants of the Lord must direct music, 4) and all the servants of the Lord must show respect to God.

4. Blessings of the night
The Lord, who created the heavens and the earth, will bless those who fearfully meet God and worship Him with devotion at Zion.
