시인은 그가 하나님 말씀에 신실했기 때문에 고난이 왔다고 말합니다. 본문은 그리스도인의 삶에 있는 고난의 목적, 고난의 근원, 그리고 목표를 보여줍니다.
본문은 고난에 대한 하나님의 목적을 다루고 있지만 고난이라는 말을 자주 언급하지 않습니다. 여기서 더 중요한 말은 ‘선하심(good)' 이라는 말입니다.

1. 고난의 목적
고난은 많은 사람들에게 공통으로 옵니다. 그러나 어떤 고난은 하나님께 순종의 길로 가게 하는 교정을 위한 고난이고, 어떤 고난은 소망을 이루는 건설적인 고난이기도 합니다. 그리고 또 어떤 고난은 그리스도를 영화롭게 하기도 합니다.
하나님이 주시는 고난의 목적은 우주적입니다. 하나님은 우리로 하여금 고난을 통하여 하나님 말씀에 순종하는 것을 배우도록 하십니다. 또 고난을 통해 하나님 말씀을 배우고 이해하도록 하십니다. 마틴 루터는 ‘내가 고난 받을 때까지 하나님의 말씀의 의미를 알지 못했다. 나는 항상 내 최고의 선생을 하나님 말씀에서 찾았다’ 고 했습니다. 그는 하나님 말씀을 잘 알고, 가르치기도 했으나 하나님이 그를 고난에 던져 넣으시기 전까지 그 말씀의 깊은 뜻을 이해하지 못했다고 했습니다.

2. 고난의 근원
고난의 근원은 하나님이십니다. 그러나 하나님은 고난 중에도 성실하십니다.
시인은 고난 중에 하나님께 다음과 같은 3가지를 기도합니다.
① 교만한 자들이 부끄럽게 되도록
② 주를 경외하는 자들이 시인을 보고 격려를 얻도록
③ 자신이 주의 율례대로 살므로 수치를 당하지 않도록

3.고난의 결과
스펄젼 목사님은 ‘이 시는 매우 어두운 흑암이다. 그러나 어둠 속에서 별들은 더욱 반짝인다. 어둠에는 새벽의 약속이 있다’ 고 말씀합니다.
84절은 시편 119편에서 하나님 말씀에 대한 언급이 빠진 절입니다. ‘시인을 핍박하는 자를 언제 심판하실 것입니까? 그들이 나를 위해 웅덩이를 팠고, 나는 세상에서 거의 멸하였습니다.’ 그럼에도 불구하고 시인은 주의 법을 따르오니 주의 사랑으로 살려 주소서 라고 기도합니다. 그리하시면 하나님의 법을 더욱 잘 지킬 것이라고 합니다.

사랑하는 성도 여러분,
하나님은 당신의 백성들이 하나님의 길을 알도록 만드셨습니다. 그러므로 우리는 하나님의 계명을 깨닫는 은사를 달라고 기도해야 합니다.
고난 가운데서도 하나님께 성실하므로 하나님이 주시는 고난의 목적에 합당한 삶을 사시는 저와 여러분이 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 간절히 소원합니다.

Suffering
(Psalm 119:65-88)

The psalmist says that sufferingcame to him because he was faithful to God's word. This psalm gives us three points regarding the Christian life: the purpose of suffering, the origin of suffering,
and the goal of suffering. This psalm also gives us God's purpose for suffering although it does not often mention the word 'suffering.' Here, the important word is 'goodness.'

1. The purpose of suffering
All people are afflicted in common. But people are led into suffering in God's way of obedience for different reasons. Some suffer in order to be corrected by God, to find their hope by God,
or to glorify Jesus Christ.
The purpose of suffering given by God is universal. God allows us to learn to obey His words, and to understand His word through suffering. Martin Luther said, “I did not understand the meaning of God's word until I was afflicted. I always found my greatest teacher in His words.”He knew and taught His word well, but he did not understand the profound meaning of His word until he was thrown into affliction.

2. The origin of suffering
The origin of suffering is the Lord. God is trustworthy in suffering. The psalmist prays to God with the following three subjects in the midst of suffering
(1) To make the arrogant be put to shame
(2) To encourage those who fear God
(3) To make those living according to God's decrees not to be dishonorable

3. The result of suffering
Charles Spurgeon says that “this psalm is pitch, black darkness. But in the midst of the darkness, the stars twinkle brightly. There is promise of daybreak in the darkness.”
One particular verse does not mention God's word (Ps. 119:84). The psalmist prays,“ When will you punish my persecutors? They dig pitfalls for me, and have almost wiped me from the earth, but Ihave not forsaken your precepts. Preserve my life according to your love.”If so, he says that he will obey the statutes of God.

God has made His people understand His way. So we must pray that He will give us His grace to awaken to His commands.
By being faithful to God in the midst of suffering, I sincerely pray that you and I will live in accordance with the purpose of the suffering that God has given us in the name of Jesus Christ.
