철의 나라 로마가 멸망한 것은 군사력 때문이 아니라 내적 부패와 문화적 퇴폐 때문이었습니다. 현대 사회는 자기만족만을 추구하는 문화적 야만인들로 우글거리는 신암흑기입니다.

1. 성도는 흔들리지 않는 시온산과 같아야 한다.
언제 어디서 보아도 산은 의연하고 안온하고 동요가 없습니다. 여호와를 의지하는 주의 백성들은 언제나 산처럼 굳게 서서 요동하지 않아야 합니다. 하나님의 신앙 위에 인격의 집을 세운 사람은 결코 흔들림이 없습니다.
하나님은 하나님 백성들의 신앙의 기초가 되실 뿐 아니라 예루살렘을 둘러싸고 있는 산들처럼 하나님 백성을 악인들의 손에서 보호하십니다.
시온산은 믿는 자의 상징입니다. 그 산을 두른 산들은 성도들을 항상 감싸고 계신 하나님 임재의 상징입니다(2절). 거룩한 성을 두른 산들은 성문을 지키는 파수병같이 서 있습니다. 이런 하나님의 보호는 일시적인 것이 아니고 영원한 것이며, 우리가 그것을 기뻐하는 한 그 보호는 영원까지 계속될 것입니다.

2. 악인이 공격해 올 때
느헤미야와 에스라 때에 이스라엘에는 유대인들이 살고 있었지만 악인의 규가 다스렸습니다(3절). 이것은 마치 하나님 백성들이 하나님의 섭리 속에 살고 있으면서 세속 정부와 세속 사람들에 의해 다스림을 받는 것과 같습니다. 하나님은 세속 권력을 교회에 주시지 않고 국가 정부에 주셨습니다. 따라서 우리는 국가에 복종하고 통치자를 위해 기도할 의무가 있습니다. 물론 국가는 항상 선만을 행하지 않습니다. 하나님의 백성조차 세속권력에 의해 부패할 수 있습니다. 이런 위험에 대해 시인은 4가지 대책을 제시합니다.
① 약속을믿어라
② 기도하라
③ 경고를받아라
④ 축복하라

3.불확실한 시대에 하나님을 신뢰해야
기독교를 아일랜드에 들여온 St. Patrick는 젊은 로마인이었습니다. 영국에서 아일랜드 해적들에게 체포되어 16세에 아일랜드 추장의 노예가 되었다가 6년 후 도망쳤지만, 그 후 하나님의 부르심을 받고 아일랜드 선교사로 들어갔습니다. Patrick에게는 외부적 보호막이 전혀 없었습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그는 66세의 나이로 죽을 때까지 하나님의 소명을 간직하며 아일랜드를 완전히 변화시켰습니다. 아일랜드에 복음을 전할때 Patrick는 오직 하나님을 신뢰하므로 일했습니다.

사랑하는 성도 여러분,
시인과 같이 '여호와를 의지하는 자는 시온산이 흔들리지 아니하고 영원히 있음 같도다'라고 고백하시는 저와 여러분이 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 간절히 소원합니다.


Like Mount Zion
(Psalms 125:1-5)

The fact that Rome, which was as strong as iron, eventually fell was not due to any military power but its own inner corruption and cultural demoralization. Our modern society belongs to a new dark age, which is full of cultural barbarians who pursue their own selfcontentment.

1. Christians must be like Mount Zion which is unshakeable
Mount Zion is heroic, tranquil, and unshakeable whenever we see it. Whenever God's people trust in the Lord, they can always stand strong like a mountain and not be shaken. Those who build their house upon faith in God cannot be shaken. This security is not simply based on people's faith, but on God who protects His people from wicked hands like the mountains surround Jerusalem. Mount Zion is symbolic of Christians, while the mountains surrounding Mount Zion are symbolic of God's presence, since He is always surrounding Christians (v. 2).
The mountains surrounding the holy castle town are like guards at the gate of a castle, protecting it. In the same way, God's protection over us is not temporary but forever. As long as we rejoice in it, His protection will continue forever.

2. When we are attacked by the wicked
In the time of Nehemiah and Ezra, although Jews lived in Israel, the scepter of wicked kings ruled over Israel (v. 3). While God's people were living under His Providence, they were simultaneously ruled by a worldly government. The Lord does not give worldly power to the church, but to the nation's government.
Accordingly, we need to obey our country and be responsible to pray for our rulers. Needless to say, a country does not always do what is right. Even the people of God can be corrupted by worldly power. Therefore, the psalmist shows us four countermeasures to this danger.
(1) Trust in God's promises
(2) Pray to God
(3) Receive the warnings
(4) Give blessings

3. In an unreliable time, we must trust only in God
St. Patrick was a Roman youth who brought Christianity into Ireland. When he arrived at the age of l6, he was taken by an Irish pirate in England and made a slave of an Irish chief. However six years later, he was able to escape. After that, he was called by God to go back to Ireland as a missionary. He never had any guardian to protect him, but he trusted in God. Anytime he went out to preach the gospel, he continued to trust in the Lord, until Ireland had been completely changed by the time of his death at the age of 66.

My beloved Christians!
As the psalmist confessed, "Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever" (v. 1). I sincerely pray that you and I will make this faithful confession like the psalmist in the name of Jesus Christ.
