If the Lord had not been on our side
(Psalm 124:1-8)

Psalm 124 is a psalm of a man thanking God for helping him escape the anger of the enemy. While Israel was in the midst of a national crisis, He recollects that God had given grace, and praises the Lord.
Even today, the God who chooses His people, also rejoices to lead us, protect us, and be with us.

1. 'What if...'?
Due to the fact that we are Christians, we often face danger.
While we don't deserve to be spared from danger, we often experience God's unusual deliverance. If the Lord had not been on our side, would we have been delivered? We need to ask this question courageously and answer it honestly.
The psalmist answers the following question with six points, "If God had not been on our side, what would have happened to us?"

(1) The enemy would have swallowed us alive (v. 3).
(2) The torrent would have swept us away (v. 4).
(3) The flood would have engulfed us (v. 4).
(4) The raging waters would have swept all of us away (v. 5).
(5) We would have been torn apart by an animal's teeth (v. 6).
(6) We would have been like a bird trapped by a fowler's snare (v. 7).

2. What if indeed?
If the six points above had become a reality, would they not have been because of sin and punishment? If Jesus Christ had not been crucified to death for us, we would have been punished with the sufferings of wrath, judgment and sin eternally. If Jesus had not redeemed us from sin, we would have been lost as a sinner.

3. Praise be to the Lord
This psalm elaborates on the thought, "If the Lord had not been on our side, we would have perished." Therefore, we praise the Lord, because the Lord has been on our side. The core meaning of the word 'thank' means that we should worship God. If God is truly on my side and with me, then we must please Him, thank Him, and praise Him.

My beloved Christians!
Every day, we need to confess how God helps us, rejoice that He does help us, and thank Him. We are chosen by Him, and only chosen people can be the object of His grace. Psalm 121:8 says, "The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore." By this word, I sincerely pray that you and I will be protected and led by God in the name of Jesus Christ.
